Tommy Godwin | Long Distance Legend
Tommy Godwin rode further in one year than anyone else in history. He is still the 'Year Record' holder
and the record will remain his in perpetuity.
Tommy rode a steel framed bike with only four gears. Although Tommy had access to some of the best bikes of the time,
these would pale in comparison with modern machines.
The 1930's was a golden age of endurance cycling. Although Tommy would ultimately take the 'Year Record' crown,
many brave and strong riders also aimed for cycling glory.
Not only did Tommy smash the 'Year Record', but he would also go on to be the fastest to 100,000 miles.
Where did he ride to on all of those long days in the saddle?
Very sad to hear that Steve Abraham’s valiant attempts to break Tommy Godwin’s long-standing year record have ended in disaster.
Despite racking up a mind-boggling 16,888 miles for the year to date (2,500+ miles further ahead of Tommy at the same stage!), Steve was involved in a collision with a moped on the A38 in Somerset.
Steve requires surgery on a broken ankle; we wish him a very speedy recovery.
Hope to hear of news from Steve to re-attempt the challenge at some point in the future.
